ShunterSpot Old Oak Common

Old Oak Common depot and HST/carriage sidings are situated to the north of the main line out of Paddington towards Ealing Broadway and all points west. Although the active shunter may be visible from passing trains, the stored shunters will not be easily visible. To view from the train out of Paddington, look to the right approximately 1.5 miles after passing Westbourne Park station; North Pole Depot is on the opposite side of the line.

To view on foot, turn right outside the main entrance to Willesden Junction station along the approach road, and left at the end into Old Oak Lane. After just over a quarter of a mile, and immediately after crossing the canal, turn sharp left and then right along the canal towpath to a footbridge. View the depot from the footbridge.

For closer views, continue a short way along the towpath and turn right down a track that follows the depot fence through the trees for close views of some of the stored locos. Walk past the end of the line of stored locos for a view of the depot yard and the carriage sidings. Continue back up to re-join the canal towpath for further views and views across the main line to North Pole Depot. [Walking further along the towpath will eventually bring you out onto Scrubs Lane, from where there are views of the eastern section of North Pole Depot. Turning left onto Scrubs Lane will eventually give you views of Willesden depot, and a left turn into Harlesden High Street will return you to Willesden Junction station.]

For views of the carriage sidings and HST depot, continue along Old Oak Lane after the canal, and turn left into Old Oak Common Lane. Shortly after passing the depot entrance, you will see the carriage sidings on your left.
