Millerhill is on the south-east outskirts of Edinburgh and is not visible from passing trains as it is on a freight-only line.
From the A1 take the A6095 Newcraighall Road off to the west, and at the next roundabout, turn left. Go straight over the next roundabout and follow the road past the DIY store as it bends round to the right. Take the first left (Whitehill Road) and follow this road uphill, keeping left at both the first and second forks in the road. Park by the railway bridge to view the northern end of the yard. Binoculars required. The area is safe during the daytime, but should be avoided after dark.
To view the east side of the yard, go to the end of the road, then turn right to walk down the track, following the trees. Climb the slight embankment to see the side of the yard.
To view the west side of the depot and the yard, at the beginning of the bridge step over the wire fencing and follow the public right of way. There used to be a style here but it was never put back after workmen had dug up the embankment. Walk along the top of the embankment until you come to a broken away fence, and climb up the hillside to view. The wooded area is not railway property; you can go down the embankment and you reach a well-worn path popular with dirt bikers. A fence separates these paths from the yard and the private property.
For restricted views of the south end of the yard, return back down Whitehill Road and take the second left which turns back sharply on yourself. Follow this road to the T-junction and turn right onto the A6106. After approximately 1 mile, turn left at the roundabout onto the B6415. After about 600 yards, this road crosses the line into the south of the yard, and restricted views may be possible from the bridge. The track off to the right by Jewson's, which loops back under the road, leads to the yard and is private property.
