ShunterSpot Merehead

The Torr Quarry at Merehead is on the A361 about 4 miles east of Shepton Mallet in Somerset. Restricted views of the quarry line can be obtained from a nearby public footpath.

Take the A361 from Shepton Mallet towards Frome and after about 4 miles, look out for the obvious entrance to the quarry. Continue past the entrance and up the hill and take the next turning to the left (to East Cranmore) and then first left as the road bends round to the right. Park safely along this lane, leaving plenty of room for farm traffic. Walk to the end of the lane and turn right onto the public footpath/bridleway. Walk up this track for about a quarter of a mile to look across the mere to view the railway. Binoculars required.

Note: 08 032 is kept at the East Somerset Railway, Cranmore when not in use at the quarry. The ESR is signposted from the A361, west of the quarry entrance.

Note: Foster Yeoman have sites at Acton Yard, Isle of Grain, Merehead and Whatley, and from time to time, some of the shunters move around between these sites as needs dictate.
