The depot is on the east side of Edinburgh. Coming from the south on the A1, go straight over the roundabout onto the A199 Sir Harry Lauder Road towards Portobello. You cross over the ECML and at the next roundabout turn left into A1140 Portobello Road. Take the 4th turning on the left which is a very narrow road into Fishwives Causeway. The depot can be viewed over the wall from this narrow road with binoculars.
Vews of the other side of the depot can be obtained by going straight on over the railway bridge at the top of Fishwives Causeway before it turns left to run parallel with the main line. Check first from the bridge, then follow the track over the bridge and round to the left and view from the gate at one of the entrances to the depot.
If necessary, continue on past the depot entrance and follow the pedestrian path into the housing estate. Walk around 100 yards or so and you will see a sign indicating another depot entrance up a small street, pass this street and take the next left up an alleyway into a grassed area with a children's play park and a pond. To your left, you can see the back of the depot over a small wire fence.
The depot and shunters can also be seen from trains between Edinburgh and Musselburgh - look on the right-hand side when travelling from Edinburgh.
