ShunterSpot Barrow Hill

Barrow Hill combines a working establishment with a unique preservation site, and with Britain's last remaining operational roundhouse, it is well worth a visit. It holds around sixty preserved and/or stored locos, and small numbers of visiting locos in for repair.

From junction 30 of the M1, follow the A619 towards Chesterfield. Continue through Staveley then take the first right turn (at a crossroads in a dip) and follow this road past Staveley Works. Turn right after the railway bridge then immediately left and you are at the depot entrance.

The depot cannot be seen from a passing train, and there are no public vantage points overlooking the depot and yard. As the site is an operational one, it is only open to the public on Saturdays and Sundays.
