The shunters at Allerton are best seen from passing trains.
Limited views of the west end of the depot can also be had from a public footpath. To reach this, turn right outside Liverpool South Parkway station (Allerton as was), and walk past the entrance road to the depot and the pub, and just after the funeral directors, take the public footpath off to the right. This path runs between Allerton cemetary and a cricket pitch, and one or two shunters can be seen by looking across the cricket pitch (binoculars required). Note that leaving the footpath and crossing the boundary wall or fence towards the depot would constitute tresspass.
To view from the train, you need only travel between the above station and Hunts Cross, the next station to the east. Look to your left as you leave the station. The views are frequently hampered by parked wagons.
A Merseytravel off-peak Saveaway ticket for area C covers Liverpool Lime St, Edge Hill and Allerton and provides excellent value unlimited travel between 9:30am and 4pm weekdays, and anytime at weekends.
